Stations, Ron Gibbons is a Lighting Research Scientist at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute's Center for Advanced Safety Systems.  He's talking about improving pedestrian safety on Virginia's roads.  You can find out more about the center at: http://www.vtti.vt.edu/index.cfm?fuseaction=DisplayResearchGroup&divisionID=10.

Even though there are fewer people driving and walking at night, 56 percent of all pedestrian-vehicle accidents happen during that time.  Gibbons says the big issue, simply, is visibility.

Gibbons says his research group is looking at ways to improve overhead lighting at crosswalks.  But it's also looking at building better headlamps.  That research includes investigating the use of a part of the ultraviolet spectrum... the safe U-V-A part.  He says there are advantages and disadvantages to the technology.
